The Audience for 1 Direction
Who Are The Audience? Information About The Audience
Typical Age: According to www.safetysportsgrounds.org.uk One Direction’s typical age for audience are aged at 80% of them being 8 - 18 years old.
Reason: This could be because most fans can see their idols young, singing pop with lyrics aimed at the younger audience.
Typical Gender: The typical gender towards One Direction are the females again according to the source linked above. Males like 1D similarly, however, they have a much larger female fan base with a split of 90:10.
Reason: The reason behind this is quite possibly because the female age range of 8 - 18 could find members of the boy band attractive, some of them fantasising about their favourite singers.
Who Are The Audience? Information About The Audience
Typical Ethnicity: Mostly anyone in Britain have the typical fan base for listening to One Direction.
Reason: This is because, 1D being a UK originated band firstly gathered many fans from the X Factor appearance (A British Television Programme.) Therefore more British would be interested than for example, Italy.
Typical Regions/ Location: Urban areas.
Reason:More people stacked within a specific area who can listen to the music and chat to people around their area influencing others to watch and or listen to it.
Who Are The Audience? Audience’s Spending Habits
Typical items brought by fans: One Direction Fans mostly buy everyday items, such as, pens, bags, books, clothes and memorabilia.
Reason: Recently over the past few years, One Direction has unleashed rucksacks, pens, posters, t-shirts and a wide variety of merchandise based on their brand as a result they buy their products as part of their everyday spending habits.
Typical Spending Power the audience have: The audience has a low spending power at under £30 a month.
Reason: The audience has this much spending power as the typical audience are young with not very much money in their pocket to spend especially those fans aged around 8. As a result One Direction has got merchandise under this price to give their potential audience a range of products for them in the audiences range of money.
Who Are The Audience? Audience’s Preferred Bands
Audience’s Band Base: According to the majority of young females, they like group bands such as, little mix, and the Vamps etc.
Reason: This is because they are kind of stylish and the younger audience look up to their preferred bands for inspiration, sometimes even for their fashion choice.
Audience’s Preferred Artists: Audience’s artists are typically those pop artists encouraging their good-paced songs such as Katy Perry, Taylor Swift etc.
Reason: Because they sing to a rhythm teenage girls are influenced with and can sing along to. Also because the artists, in music videos and on stage are quite energetic and all over the place to invite the audience into their songs and fan base.
Who Are The Audience? Audience’s Preferred Platform
Audience most used Music Platform: On YouTube, One Direction’s ‘Best Song ever’ has a viewership of 482,506,697 Million views giving nearly half a billion fans have watched this. Source from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_v9MY_FMcw.
Reason: YouTube is easily accessible and is freeing viewing and listen to music. Many 8 - 18 years olds would resort to YouTube as any device can use the website and it does not require the audience’s login details or to sign up to watch or listen to a song, whereas iTunes and Spotify for access does which may disencourage audience’s to use these platforms despite the wide range of people who does use iTunes etc.
Who Are The Audience? Audience’s Preferred Song Video
Music Video preferred: The age range of 8 - 18 like a performance concept for music video.
Reason: As they get to see their idols performing on the small screen. Although performance is solely the preferred music video, audience of 1D like a narrative sequence as well including 1D’s appearance in the music video as well. As it tells the audience a story which within it it acted by their favorite (possibly) viewers and audience.
Analysing Music Videos 1
On Clean Bandit’s track ‘Rather Be’ featuring Jess Glynne, the type of music video is all, performance, narrative and conceptual. We see a glimpse of Jess Glynne and Clean Bandit performing halfway through the video of the song. And it is telling a story of a place they would rather be. Also the conceptual side of the video is how the girl in miming the song out on top of Jess Glynnes voice. We also see dancing and editing in the video.
The camera uses cinematography well. The camera pans around a outside scenery then into a bedroom. Used close ups to show what see is holding and what people are doing.
There are several uses of visual effects in the video. The Clean Bandit logo appears in a person’s eye, and a piece of meat when cut, there is also an image of a member of CB on a truck, that disappears when she looks at it for a second time. The logo is edited in the objects which creates a visual effect.
The video links to the music and lyrics very well. The video does link in with the lyrics a bit. This is because, at the start it has ‘We're a thousand miles from comfort’ which the video is set in japan/ china thousands miles from britain. They use ‘We set out on a mission to find our inner peace’ which when the girl go on journey through town she finds constant reminders (the logo) so she might be trying to find peace, as she falls onto her bed but interrupted when she appears in a concert. And in relation to the music to the video, the girl’s lips move in rhythm to the music being sung over the top of the video. And when she sees the man, he plays the keyboard in time with the song.
There are small bits of intertextuality in the ‘Rather Be’ video of the song. This is because on Duke Dumonts feat, A*M*E - Need U 100% has a similar story in the video where people dancing around the man and at the end he lie on a bed till the music stops.
There is likely going to be a wide audience interested in the ‘Rather Be’ song but ultimately people who like music and i’d say those of a age 15+ and mainly females would watch it. As it is quite a meaningful song, whereas men not to be stereotypical like more fast paced thorough wording and rhythm in their songs, therefore I would guess any age around fifteen plus females would enjoy the music video.
The typical genre of the song is pop, just the modern type of music, it is quite calm and a little fast in places but it is a smooth song to listen to.

Analysing Music Videos 2
On Pharrell Williams’ track ‘Happy,’ the type of music video has both, performance and conceptual. Pharrell Williams is seen in most on the video singing his song. There are also people dancing and singing on screen to his song which brings the theme of contextuality.
The camera uses cinematography okay but not great. The picture is clear but the camera is not on one place for more than 5 seconds is keeps switching to Pharrell and people dancing every so often. It does a very short pan of the kitchen a boy is in but just stays directly on the people.
There are not any visual effects which are eye catching and interesting. They do have lighting in dark places and light where they have used lighting well though to make a scene either brighter or darker to fit in with the ‘happy’ theme of the happy song.
The video links to the music and lyrics really well. The video does link in with the lyrics. This is because, at the start he is in a dark alley at the start when he mentions ‘It might seem crazy what I'm about to say, Sunshine she's here’ as it is crazy I suppose how he sings about a sun when it is quite clearly dark. The chorus includes, ‘Because I'm happy’ and on the video we see people smiles clapping along to the music.
There are brief sections of intertextuality in the ‘Happy’ video of the song. This is because as In gangnam style there’s cutting from one shot to another a lot but unlike happy it is mainly him in all the shots. So this is a form of intertextuality.
The target audience for Happy I think would be quite a lot of people this is because it is a very happy song as simple as it sounds and the actors who take part i the video vary from age, 4 - 70 who partake on the video. Also the figure of people are different there are thin short tall and obese and disabled people on there, it kind of suggests that no matter you disability or weight, or normality everyone deserves to be happy. So for this reason I would say that Pharrell Williams ‘Happy” would fit the target audience from very young to about 4 years of age all the way to OAPS as many are starting to accept this style of music in this day and age, however if they wouldn’t a safe guess would be between 5-50.
The typical genre of the song is pop, just the modern type of music, it is quite pacy and upbeat, the clapping is encourageable, making the viewer listener want to join is the happiness.

Developing My Ideas - 1D Night Changes - Josh Brinkley-Ripper
The Track and How I feel About it
The track is catchy as the lyrics act almost as a tune and it is the kind of track you could pierce in your mind and go over and over in your head with.
The track has a steady pace to it. The lyrics are not too fast so that you cannot process what they are singing, but it is not too slow were your waiting for a word after word to come out of someone’s mouth thinking to yourself ‘I can’t wait till it’s over.’
The track is also very narrative, this is because just by looking at the lyrics you can kind of make out the story of the song and morals in the song.
I feel calm while listening to it as is is runs through the lyrics smoothly and steadily so you can gather what the story is within the lyrics of the song which is very informative giving the listener an idea of what’s happening.
The Creative Idea
My idea for the music video is to have a range of things happening within the eight verses that are present in the song. Verse one, I would like to have someone walking in the dar, lit up well though so we can see what they are wearing. This will link into the lyrics having a figure walking in dark eg ‘going out tonight’ and seeing what they are wearing would be the part which has ‘kind of dress’ or ‘showing off.’
Verse two, I would have a car going fast up a road or street while dark and see the light hit someone’s hair wher back to the lyrics says ‘driving too fast (and) Moon is breaking through her hair.’
Verse three, I would have some young person holding their back giving the impression that they cannot move to stereotypical the elderly to mimic ‘We’re only getting older baby.’ Also within this verse I would have the night changing into day over a few seconds not hours in the background of the person to link to the lyrics where ‘how fast the night changes’ even though it is used in a different context it would give people another impression to think about the songs lyrics. Adding to this verse I would have someone, who had dozed of, in a chair or lying down somewhere, to wake up again making the video story contrast the lyric, ‘Dreamed of Disappearing when you wake up.’
Verse four, I would have the fast car from verse two but I would also have a car chasing this car with someone looking out, let’s say a window before turning his head and putting his hand in front of it holding a cigarette to make it look like he is trying to hide from the second car, the lyrics for this verse which are significant are, ‘Chasing it tonight (car on car)’ and ‘He’s waiting, hides behind a cigarette (car window hid thing.)’
Verse five, I would have similar to verse one someone in the dark but this time we would see them running and close ups of their skin shining in the darkness.
Verse six, I would have the same visuals as verse three has as it is the chorus and a repetitive verse within the song.
Verse seven, I would have, again verse one, however, we would see them walking the opposite direction to before, same setting, but we see a close up of a image of her younger self expressing the innocence she lost, lyric say ‘going out tonight (and) Reminds her of the missing piece of innocence she lost.
Verse eight, I would, as for the chorus have a very similar style and setting to verse three and six but in addition to waking up the person from verse one, five and seven is waiting there for him or her.
Cinematography & Lighting
I will use cinematography in various different ways during the music video. A would be having a long pan for when we see the person walking and running through the dark night so it looks continuous. For the seventh verse I will use a close up to show an image and expression of someone’s face.
B would be using quick short shots including long shot for the youth back part and close ups when they wake up etc. So this gives it a quick flow through in relation to the lyrics at the time being said.
C would be the short panning for the car sequence and a medium long shot and possibly a close up to show the person in the car hiding. This would make the story seem like a bit of a chase and the cinematography hopefully would show that greatly.
The way I would use lighting differs depending on the walking and running scenes to the chorus. In the first part where the person is walking out at night and running in a few verses on I would use lighting to give the impression of a moon, spotting just that person in the light so we can see what they are wearing.
The second part where we have the move from night to day and or vice versa. I would dim the light by increasing of decreasing the lightage depending on the state of whether it is night or day, however, I think the lighting could make this work great.
Editing
For Verse one, five and seven It may be possible to film in somewhere where there is a backdrop and have the person walking and running in the fifth verse in front of a backdrop with lighting not that high as it would be night and then edit in a night time background on top of the back drop once the sequence had been filmed. This would give the impression that they are in the street walking out tonight as the lyrics say but in actual fact they are walking in front of a screen of nothing with just lighting affecting the way they walk.
For Verse two, and four where there is the car sequence it would be possible to film two cars driving along at first it would be one. And on the computer speed the car being filmed up so it gives us the feeling that the car is going very fast. And film when it happens to have two cars being filmed and fastened once editing it. For the inside of car where we see a person, it would be quite easy to just do a close up of someone’s face with background noise of a car so it feels like they are in the car even though they are not.
For Verse three, six and eight where we see the back holing and the change in day night. The editing I will use will be the lighting and brightness, obviously to create the sense of it being dark and then bright as if a new day has been. I will use the camera to bring the sense of the person blinking by allowing them to hold the camera as they make their movements to get up in verse eight and it will edit the view to make it focus on the person he wakes up to by using the rule of thirds in this part of the sequence.
Location, Props & Costumes
The Location of the music video will be the TV Studio if available so we can use the backdrop, green screen to use for the first and forthcoming verses so we can digitally add the night background afterwards. Outside college and near to some roads with cars on, so we can shoot a couple of cars driving so we can speed them up and use them in the sequence. And finally a room located somewhere in the college where someone can pretend to be asleep and wakes up and sits up thinking, gosh.
The Props that will be used would be firstly an image that the person will look back on near the end of the song. A cigarette for the person pretending to be in the car hiding his or her face. A chair or some sitting thing to pretend to be asleep on before waking up. And the cameras and equipment used to film and keep track of the music video sequence.
The Costumes that will be used are just the normal casual clothing people wear on a day t day basis. A red top would be good in connection to the lyrics of the song, however, any top or clothing will do. But there is not really much clothing costumes etc needed to be considered just the clothes a person wears on that day.
Explain how the video responds to the audio
The video will respond to the audio well. This is because it will be filmed verse by verse and taking consideration of what is said on the audio will depend on what we do with the video, and example of this is, where the person will be walking in the dark on a street. It will contrast the lyrics and audio of the song, for example, ‘Going out Tonight, ‘ is used.
The Audience for this video and where it will be shown
The audience for the music video will be those who like the one direction song of ‘Night Changes.’ Despite this, those who like music videos will also be audienced as they may be intrigued with what we have done with that piece of music in a way where we have changed it into our own music video. Adding to this the age average I would think would be eight plus, possibly a little bit more considering it’s night time theme and fast cars about.

Rather Be, good story arc.
Has a story to it and it has multiple things going on a once. She wakes up of her bed and finds herself at a concert. It is a bit like the lyrics to one direction night changes as on my music video you will have someone waking up to another person which kind of relates to Rather Be having someone wake up to something different or weird. So parts of Rather Be will be considered but it will be very different to Clean Bandits ft Jess Glynnes Audio and Video to Rather Be.
Josh Brinkley-Ripper
PRE-PRODUCTION
SYNOPSIS
I aim to create a music video suited for a One Direction age range of 8 - 18 suited typically for the female gender along with my group. The proposed length of the music video will be the length of the 1D song Night Changes, so around three minutes long. The format of the production would be a three minute kind of drama romantic narrative and performance that would piece together a kind of story throughout the music video. The crew will consist of three people and additional actors to act in front of the camera. What will happen in the music video? In the duration of the music video there will be a female actor who will walk and complete actions to link in with the lyrics of the song and the story will tell a story of her going against her usual intentions and being rescued from some relationship with someone following her who is not related to her who wants to live life to the full it’ll have some kind of drama. The target audience will be females of an age of 8 to 18 years old, as typically, these are the type of audience who like One Direction and this genre of music.
THE TREATMENT
On screen my music video will sound okay with vocals behind the film in the background. It will be heard clearly and will see someone perform is small parts of the film. The actual music video itself will be seen quite dramatic, light and dark in places. Editing that I feel should be included in this music video is quick snappy transitions while someone happens to be following her but when it comes to turn from drama to romance change to slow fading transitions to try and express feelings of them through transitions. It’ll show some continuity how she begins to be followed following on to when someone reaches out to her in the end. Cinematography such as the shot sizes I’d like to be some medium lengthed panning from both left to right, right to left. Other shots I’d like are medium and medium long shots. A worm's point of view would fit in nice if she seems a bit cautious at the start. Mise-en-scene like locations, I would have someone walking down somewhere lit but darkened as it brings out the drama nicely to begin with. So a street would be quite nice to film on in. A room within a house with a bed or relaxation spot would also be nice at the end as we would get to see the tone and theme of the music video change ever so slightly. A red dress preferably would be worn in the costumes to coincide with the lyrics. Props would be a handbag worn by a female and a bunch of flowers held by the follower at the end, other props could be considered if needed. There would be a little lighting needed for the dark street so it could be more lighter to know what is happening even though it is a dark scene. Colour on scene would be the red dress bringing the attention to that as the other colours I would like to think would be quite plain and still while the red brings it a bold feeling and strong colour to it afterwards. The sound would be a bit diegetic as the vocals are sang of screen while a story is in place, however, there is also a small part of performance that changes the theme of storytelling as the diegetic-ness flows away. The volume of the song would be quite high and overpowering as the lyrics would explain the muisc video and what is happening in it. The target audience would be around 8 to 18, the video would be rated a BBFC rating of around Parental Guidance possibly a Twelve that would alter the age to around the teenage side of things. The typical gender watching would be female, lower to middle class with those who are interested in music and pop songs typically created and made by One Direction. The music video would be screened online via YouTube etc.
My idea:
Verse 1 - Walking in dark, see what they are wearing.
Verse 2 - See car going fast, see light on hair.
Verse 3 - See someone holding back, day night motion, someone wake up.
Verse 4 - Car following car, someone hold cigarette and turn head.
Verse 5 - Running in dark, see skin.
Verse 6 - See someone holding back, day night motion, someone wake up.
Verse 7 - Walking away in dark, see what they are wearing, see image.
Verse 8 - See someone holding back, night day motion, someone wake up, see person from Verse 1 in front them.
Two people involved in video. Conceptual

The college is quite noisy, espically the atrium however we will be deleteing all audio from video so noise isn’t an issue.
Is the location light enough? Will it need extra artificial lighting?
The TV Studio can be very dark so we will need to use the studio lights to light the area well so the music video can be filmed effiently. But there are windows and lights that allow light through in the other areas of college.
Is there a power supply at the location? Can it be used by the production?
Yes there is a wide range of sources available for supply of power in the college.
