Film Trailer and Poster Project Work

Film Trailer Music and Sound Analysis’

Film Trailer Music and Sound Analysis 1

TRAILER: Herbie Fully Loaded

LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0TfPpjDkWU

The Herbie Fully Loaded Trailer is about the rediscovery of an old race car that has feelings, emotions, and tactics. He is brought by a girl at a scrapyard who goes racing and street races with Herbie after a revamp to the car.

The genre is Family, Comedy as can tell by the use of visuals and sound. A ‘boing’ for when someone walks into a wall. Several ‘revs’ of car engines to introduce Herbie. They have used robotic sounds to show of Herbies human feelings as well. Music is lively and energetic.

The intention of the music is to make the film trailer feel serious but also funny as it did with the use of sound effects when someone hit their head with a boing makes it feel much more included in the genre other than just silence with an action.

The music and sounds work really well with the visuals as you can see that with certain actions they add a sound effect to empathise that something is happening. For example when the car races there is a Formula 1 feeling how you have typical racing music to show the competition and feel of the race. Also when they bit came where Herbie was in the demolition thing the music got all rock and pop to show a side of danger but also entertainment.

The trailer itself looks really all over the place there a race here and another story there so it shows how the music gave it that bit extra to show what the feel to the trailer actually was for example the upbeat music for the comedic parts of the trailer.

The trailer is very effective. It is effective as the music contrast the emotions and feelings that the visuals show. It brings a good sense to what the trailer and the film would probably be about.

Film Trailer Music and Sound Analysis 2

TRAILER: Sherlock The Abominable Bride TV Film

LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKo59t3h0cY

The trailer is about the detective Sherlock Holmes and sidekick John Watson uncovering a mystery about some bride with a load of other obstacles in the way of solving the case.

The genre of the TV Film is Crime, Drama and Mystery. The sounds the trailer has used are eerie darkened ones such as when he enters a place the door creaks and howls in the wind to create a stronger sense of mystery. The music is quite fast and beaty as when the character runs the rhythm gets faster.

The TV Film is intended to show of the characters based on the Sherlock Holmes books. The trailers intent is to get viewers on the edge of their seat waiting for something dramatic to do in the storyline.

The interaction with the visual is very good especially the music which changes to a specific scenario. When action comes into place there is quite a lot of fast rhythms and when it comes to a halt it fades becomes quiet and mystic and tense in places. So the visual does work well with the sounds used in Sherlock The Abominable Bride.

The trailer is very effective, there is a few frights and as it is set during the night based on what i’ve seen it creates a good perspective on a classic crime drama genre of film. The music really reveals the tone and mystery. The sounds also create a good sense to how they are used to coincide with the theme of the trailers. In a way that depending on the character there is a different theme of sound and music. Such as Sherlock has the mystery solving them whereas Moriarty and the Abominable Bride has a more suspense theme with sound and music.

Film Trailer Music and Sound Analysis 3

TRAILER: Despicable Me 3

LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rlq39IC07qA

The trailer is about a villain animated guy wrecking havoc to a ship. And two agents turned good go try and find out what's what in hope of stopping the whole situation.

The genre of Despicable Me 3 is Animation Comedy, Family, Action film as of the load of laughs and family related jokes included within the trailer and situations going on. For the villain they have used ‘bad’ song for music to show the bad side to the character but also the laughs towards the character as well also with several effective sounds.

The intention that it is suppose to bring across is that a man and woman goes on some kind of mission to get a villian in purple. The trailer intends to show the audience some of the best bits in the film for the trailer such as the comedy and when the ban got stuck up in bubble gum and floated past an office birthday party.

The interaction with the visual is good as it brings the main characters together and flows into what would be expected of a animated universal film. The visual works well with the sounds as the characters have a different sound and music with them.

The villain seems to have a bad song playing while the character Gru has a innocent embarrassed a bit theme that comes across well to help portray the different character types in the film itself and not just the trailer.

The trailer is very effective as you get a sense of what is going on with the whole story eg people go after villain and story develops type thing. And brings you to a feel of continuation of what to expect judged on the trailer and the previous three films if you have seen them, Despicable Me 1, 2 and Minions. So it make the trailer more effective with those additional sounds and music effects.

What first attracts your attention in the image?

Harry armed with a sword.

Ted with a bottle of beer.

Is this shot CU, MS, LS etc?

WS

LS

MLS

LS

What does the image tell us about the film’s genre?

That most of it is action as 007 holds a gun in his hand. The background is dark that could represent the theme of the film. The white jacket, arms crossed suggest that it is funny in places as he seems fairly confident.

That it is an animation racing film. As there are sports cars on a blocked of road making way for the cars and the whole images are animated.

It’s animation. The characters are smiling so it tells us that it’s a happy funny film. And that it’s about monsters in a form of education as from the books and school jackets.

It tells us that there is a lot of tension and conflict built up in the film as Harry holds a sword and ron has a frightened expression on his face.

That’s it is funny and light. The white background makes it feel quite calm but the front part of the image kind of tells you that the two of them can cause chaos if needed to or wanted to.

Is the image used a unit still or a portrait?

portrait.

unit still.

portrait.

unit still.

unit still.

The two main characters are shown.

How might you describe the overall impact of the image?

There’s a big impact the poster has because it stands out 007 and the darker figure which makes you eager to find out what’s going on.

The impact is huge as you see the london in the background and other sights as well making you draw into the film.

The impact is quite effective as you have the main characters and a few addition objects in the image that not only tells you but draws you into it.

There is a lot of impact of the image as it makes the person seeing the poster think, what’s he armed for? What’s happened!?

The impact is that it is a teddy bear that stands out as you wouldn’t expect a teddy bear to be on the poster for a comedy film.

How does the style of the text used help to tell us something about the film?

The text is written in a bold basic font, it tells us that there is a serious situation happening whereas a curly font might make you think it’s all comedic etc.

It tells us it’s a unique film and there’s classica features in it as well based on the style of the font and logo used.

The text is big and bold with an eye in the ‘M’ it tells us that it’s funny a big bold storyline.

The text of ‘Harry Potter’ brings a sense of magic as the font style is unique and puts you on the edge waiting for a problem to happen.

Its basic, lower case, could suggest that the characters aren’t bright as the ‘t’ isn’t capitalized. The colour green for text could symbolize the colour of green alcohol bottles.

Still Photographers Research

The Inbetweeners Movie

Still Photography by Nicola Dove

She works with director, producers and actors creating film stills and portraits. Photos she’s produced for films have been ‘the inbetweeners,’ ‘in the loop,’ and ‘ginger and rosa.’

Ginger and Rosa

Still Photography by Nicola Dove

She typically works on the genre of Dramas such as ‘A Number’ and ‘Great Expectations.’ However, she has produced work for comedies and action.

In The Loop

Still Photography by Nicola Dove

Her photography often has actors in an action pose. I think she works like this so you get a sense of what the characters are like in character on a film poster.

Sherlock

Still Photography by Robert Viglasky

He studies at the University of Westminster. He has produced photography for ‘Sherlock,’ ‘Partners In Crime,’ and ‘Tigers Heart.’

Partners In Crime

Still Photography by Robert Viglasky

He typically take still photography of dramas as most of his work is for, ‘Sherlock’, ‘Poldark’ and ‘Drama’. He has also created photography in other areas aswell such as Action etc.

Tigars Heart

Still Photography by Robert Viglasky

He most often uses portrait images however there are some traits of unit still photograph present in some of the backgrounds. I think he works like this so we get to not only see the main characters in a film but also to show of the genre.

TRAILER ANALYSIS: THE INBETWEENERS

REPRESENTATION

Who is represented?

How represented?

Why represented that way?

Who is NOT represented?

The main characters in the film are represented. They are represented as comical characters. They’re represented in this way to show the audience that they can be a tad immature and think that it’s all a laugh really. Minor characters in the storyline/ trailer are not represented as the trailer focuses on the main four characters showing the audience what they’re like when it comes to the real world.

AUDIENCE

Target audience?

Demo, socio, VaLS etc.

How targeted?

Does it work?

The target audience is aimed at 15+ generally I think the target audience would be teenagers plus, who has a sense of humour. It’s targeted at this age range as teenagers tend to experiment with alcohol and have nights out for a middle age audience can also relate to it as it could help reflect at their younger years at how they used to got out and peed and do stupid stuff.

INSTITUTION(S)

Who’re the institution?

LANGUAGE

Cinematography.

Mise-en-scen.e

Sound.

Titltes/Credits & GFX.

How these create meaning.

(Use technical terminology?)

The editing is cut well. They have used interesting cinematography such as a birds and worms eye view the lighting has been used well to portray the characters in tough situations and dilemmas they may come across in the actual film. The location is suited great for the trailer as it’s shots of nightclubs and the beach gets across what type of film it is actually going to be ie a comedy. They’ve used text/ titles in between shots with a wallop sound or bash to make it think more like an action packed comedy. The text is red on white as these are bold colours and can show a humourous emotions through the red colour such as wildness anger typical comedic dilemma etc. The credits show the names of the main cast, directors productions and company/ institutions taking part in the making of the film.

IDEOLOGY

Messages and values?

Ideology of the film poster?

Is this communicated?

The message that appears to come across in the trailer are that four key characters go on a holiday and live their young lives doing the typical drinking nightclubbing youth things, however, it also brings the message that if you go absolut wild drinking etc there will be headaches hangovers and consequences for your actions that you’ll regret the next day and take away for the next time.

NARRATIVE/STORY

Characters? Types?

Character development?

Storyline(s)?

Conflicts & interest?

the characters all seem to be quite funny. You have the serious one who can try and take a joke, the too confident one who knows best for everyone, the laid back not meant to be but he is funny one and the mixed one who is funny confident in places but is a bit shy ish in some places. The trailer shows the characters all attempting to get a girl and shows them developing and plucking up the courage to ask them out. A few shots of the trailer shows brief bits of conflict between the major characters.

GENRE

Genre of film?

Codes & conventions used?

Iconography?

Hybrid genre? Sub-genre?

The genre of the film is definitely a comedy. I suppose you could say it is a little romantic as its a boy wanting girl type thing but it could have small bits of action in the genre and dilemma happening so it seems overall like a sitcom trailer but for a much larger scale.

OVERALL

Does it promote the film? Used where?

Effectiveness of the trailer?

The trailer does promote the film as it shows a good portrayal of what the film contains such as the relationships between characters and the storyline and characters themselves. The trailer would get me to watch the full film as it shows good bits of comedy and dialogue in it to kind of persuade you to watch the film.

TRAILER ANALYSIS: MONSTERS INC

REPRESENTATION

Who is represented?

How represented?

Why represented that way?

Who is NOT represented?

The two main characters in the trailer are represented. They are represented as a duo character like ones not suppose to be without the other. They’re represented like this to show a brother relationship in a way and the characters how they are written are written well to suit young children.in this way to show the audience that they can be a tad immature and think that it’s all a laugh really. Minor characters in the storyline/ trailer are also represented, however, they are not as well represented as the representation as the trailer focuses on the main two characters and their relationship with a young toddler girl in the monsters inc world.

AUDIENCE

Target audience?

Demo, socio, VaLS etc.

How targeted?

Does it work?

The target audience is aimed at 3-12 year olds generally I think the target audience would be those younger children who has and get the animation films and merchandise. It’s targeted at this age range as children tend to watch all the cartoons on tv and like watching the child friendly drama in a children's animation.

INSTITUTION(S)

Who’re the institution?

Who are the stars?

Who are the film-makers?

Other films they made?

The stars are, John Goodman and Bill Crystal. Companies involved were Walt Disney, Pixar and Buena Vista pictures.

LANGUAGE

How these create meaning.

(Use technical terminology?

The editing was cut well. They have used a range of cinematography such as dutch tilts and different shots that shows the characters of with use of sounds and effects. The text is in bold blue with white lines running throughout, with an eye in the ‘M’ this gives the impression of the monsters represented in the film.

IDEOLOGY

Messages and values?

Ideology of the film poster?

Is this communicated?

The message that comes across in the trailer are that two key characters go to work in a scaring company and go on an adventure that makes them believe that making children laugh is better than them being scared through the doors. The story might be that making people happy is a good thing to do.

NARRATIVE/STORY

Characters? Types?

Character development?

Storyline(s)?

Conflicts & interest?

shows that Sully and Mike work in a company that gets energy by the amount of people they scare. They conflict with others and take an alternate feel to the workplace later on.

GENRE

Genre of film?

Codes & conventions used?

Iconography?

Hybrid genre? Sub-genre?

The genre is a funny action animation due to the trailer featuring a range of different running scenes and a range of situations.

OVERALL

Does it promote the film? Used where?

Effectiveness of the trailer?

overall the trailer does promote the film as it would make people want to know what goes on behind those doors and why some of the characters act the way they do.

TRAILER ANALYSIS: ME BEFORE YOU

REPRESENTATION

Who is represented?

How represented?

Why represented that way?

Who is NOT represented?

The main characters are represented in the Me Before You trailer. The woman is represented wearing pink and flowery tops etc as a typical drama does and the disabled man who seems to be proper by the way he spoke is dressed in a suit to show people that he can cope sort of thing. The characters are represented i this way as it stereotypically says what people are actually like. For example women equal dress femine ma not so much. The secondary characters who show up often but not as much as others are not represented. This is because they may not be big stars so the trailer only whats to include that of larger stars such as we have Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones and Jenna Coleman from Doctor Who and Victoria who are probably shown because of their popularity.

AUDIENCE

Target audience?

Demo, socio, VaLS etc.

How targeted?

Does it work?

The target audience would range from around a 25-35 age group roughly not saying younger and older people wouldn’t watch it but it is based on a story and it stars characters within this rage. Typically the female gender would watch it as it is a romantic drama so romance is mainly for females again not to say that males wouldn't watch it. The trailer works well to encourage the target audience to see it as it shows the most gender and age appropriate features that would stand out to that target audience.

INSTITUTION(S)

Who’re the institution?

Who are the stars?

Who are the film-makers?

Other films they made?

The stars of the film were mainly Sam Claflin, Emilia Clarke and Vanessa Kerby. The writer and director were Jojo Moyes and Thea Sharrock. Production companies were MGM, New Line Cinema and Sunswept Entertainment. Distrubutors for the theatrical cut was New Line Cinema.

LANGUAGE

Editing

Cinematography.

Mise-en-scen.e

Sound.

Titltes/Credits & GFX.

How these create meaning.

(Use technical terminology?

The editing is cut smoothly and the cinematography filming is quite slow to stretch to emotions felt within the trailer. This works well as it makes the viewer feel what the character may be feeling in the trailer such as a pause near the kiss to stretch the relief side of the characters feelings. The locations and props use show of the genre of the trailer in an effective way as it shows a hall for a dance and a house near to a pleasant scenery and the props portray what the characters are like more.

IDEOLOGY

Messages and values?

Ideology of the film poster?

Is this communicated?

A message that came across to me in the watching of the trailer is to love and care for people when you can. Also shows that it is good and caring for someone to look after another for company and the kindness. The film poster has the two main characters in it one with a dress and other with a suit. It links and communicates with the trailer to what the feeling of the trailer is like.

NARRATIVE/STORY

Characters? Types?

Character development?

Storyline(s)?

Conflicts & interest?

character played by a female shows that she is someone who just wants to be liked and once she is accepted she feels more motivated in herself. This develops the character as an approval releases quite a bit of stress held up on her back. The main storyline from what I can see is that the female wants approval and then gains it again.

GENRE

Genre of film?

Codes & conventions used?

Iconography?

Hybrid genre? Sub-genre?

The genre of the film is a drama and a rom storyline the typical themes that makes you realise the genre are that the situation they are in and the communication tenses you up and the rom by in the dance part where you get the gist of the trailer and what the film will be like. The genre is Drama and a subgenre Rom.

OVERALL

Does it promote the film? Used where?

Effectiveness of the trailer?

Overall the trailer does promote the film as it portrays the characters and situations the characters have to fca e and also displays the genre specifically in the short amount of two minutes within the features of the film. The trailer was used on television in the cinemas and posters have been placed in bus shelters and billboards etc. The trailer was very effective as it didn’t completed tell you or ruin the storyline so makes the viewer watch it to find out more about it.

Establishes setting and introduces character(s)

Open with a scene of the comedy-duo Graeme and Clive messing about. They purchase a new campervan online and a scene later they are in a similar vehicle reflecting on old times. Speech says, ‘I wish Paul was here.’

Are there any hints towards a sequel?

Paul will stay in his newly handed human form and pick up a female companion who stays with Graeme for a while. Having Graeme been gone a long time without his wife she knocks it off and we see her walking into the distance. Right at the end speech would say, ‘until next time.’

Original Film Title: Paul

Original Synopsis (www.imdb.com)

Two sci-fi geeks take a pilgrimage to America's UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever. For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. When he discovers he's been taken prisoner, the space-traveling smart ass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town - a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost). Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship. And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.

New Film Title: Paul - The Transformation

After reuniting with Graeme, Ruth & Clive they embark on a mission to transform Paul’s appearance, make him human to pick up his elderly girls better and to stay on Earth this time for good. But all’s not as it seems as a man secretly spies on the Transformation Process of Paul, leading to them having a Paparazzi on the lots back from the local newspaper company who hopes to exploit Paul’s secret.

What happens in the original trailer? What do we see?

We see two British men encounter an Alien. The trailer uses bold yellow text on a blue background, this brings the sense that this is a comedic film as it is bright and vibrant and these colours you wouldn’t see on horror or action etc films. We also see the highlights of the film with quite a few bits of comedy flushing through to release a few of the laughs in the film.

What techniques are you going to use? (voiceover, graphics, names)

I will use voiceovers so that the audience get a sense of what is happening. Also will get people follow onto the film more.

Graphics will also be used to show stars names and indicate what the film will be about.

L2 Media – Film Trailer Project - Film Poster Shoot Plan

Include information about the following;

  • Is your shoot a studio shoot, a location shoot or a combination of them both

The image I will use for my film poster will be a shot taken on location. I will use a location shot as it will seem effective as it will capture the forestry setting we will be filming in next week and will help show what the genre of the film will be about.

  • Are you able to capture your location images as unit stills during filming – if so which characters, scenes or locations will you need to shoot

Yes I will capture my location as unit stills during filming, it will include the main character ‘Jesse’ and will take a shot of him standing back towards the camera looking into the distance beyond the trees.

  • Do you need any props or costumes

For the image to be taken I will need the character to be wearing a bag, other than this it will just be a image of the main character in the forest.

  • Do you need to photograph a particular character

Yes, I will need to photograph the main character called ‘Jesse’ so he can appear on the film poster.

  • How will these images help you to create a poster that will promote your film – will it be effective picture publicity

The image will help me create the poster as it will be a wide shot therefore I can crop it suited to what looks best and with the font I will eventually use for the film poster it should be very effective.

  • You need to paste some examples below of images, posters etc. that you would like to reference as part of your planning

My Drive > Classroom > L2 FILM TRAILER > Poster Ideas - Here will have a few example of the kind of posters I will want to develop after shooting the images for the film poster.

There may be knocks at the door which interrupt filming. This will probably not happen but if it does we will just work around it.

Someone could slip on the driveway if it is too icy if there is bad weather conditions, This should probably not happen but if it does we will make sure the person is okay

The room is confined, but it should not be a problem as long as we ensure that there are no obstacles or items that are not needed near where the filming takes place to ensure that the room feels more spacious and comfortable to continue photoing in.

There will be general household cables coming out of landlines and electrical apparatus on location, as a result we will ensure that the cables are moved back and clear to see to ensure trip hazards are prevented so injuries to cables and other floor objects don’t occur.

Due to the location being next to a road, there may be people shouting/speaking outside and, the general public may interrupt filming for we will take additional shots of production so we have enough footage for if the production is interrupted.

Noise could risk the production process such as birds and public. This risk is very similar to the one above so read above for more information on risks.

There may be groups about while in production, however, this is a low risk. Where we can, we will try to film away from group and audience to reduce the risk for others and ourselves.

The outside, especially the woodland areas can be dangerous terrain. This can be a medium risk as there may be slippery surfaces due to weather and uneven ground near trees etc.

If the weather were really extreme, this could potentially be a high hazard as it could blow over heavy equipment setting off another hazard and the rain could cause surfaces to become slippery.

Due to the outside and park being a public place, the general public may be in the way of shooting and having our hazards mapped out the public could be at risk of our risks but this is a very low risk.

The equipment such as the tripod could be heavy and will required manual lifting. This is a medium risk as the equipment may be too heavy to lift and could be dropped and injure those near the items.

There may be noise around the public places outside though this will not risk those during production. But if the noise proves too loud it may be preventing production and could lack concentration.

It is a very low risk but wildlife such as squirrels may harm production and knock over equipment so need to be included in the risk assessment.

The Use of Music and Sound in Trailers

Put all work in the appropriate folders within your Google Drive

Session 1 - 10/11/2016

You will be analysing 3-5 different movie trailers, looking at the use of sound effects and music in each. For each you will need give a link and describe what the trailer is about. You will also need to identify and cover:

  • The genre of Music

  • Sound effects

  • Intent

  • Interaction with the visual medium

  • Effectiveness

Upon completing this you can begin planning your own music for your trailer, covering the points above.

Session 2 - 17/11/2016

In this session you will be shown how to use Logic to create your own music tracks through the use of loops and software instruments using the MIDI keyboards/computer keyboards. You can spend some time getting used to the software before beginning to generate musical ideas for your film trailers. Remember you must identify how the track you intend to create is appropriate for your trailer idea.

Session 3 - 24/11/2016

A continuation of session 2, progressing with music for your film trailer. In this session you will also be sourcing additional assets for your trailer.

Session 4 - 01/12/2016

Finishing off all music. You will also have time to generate sound effects through foley and generated sounds on Logic, as well as doing voice overs for your work.

Session 5 - 08/12/2016

Editing and post production. You will be working on your film trailers and implementing all audio aspects, making sure to ensure it is of the highest possible quality. When finished, take this time to catch up with any outstanding work from other sessions.
