FMP Evaluation AND Reflective Entries

Website Evaluation

For my final major project a vast amount of it was based on website developing. This is where I uploaded all images and place text onto and that brought the entire project together.

The main things that went well throughout the production of my website was when I was changing the backgrounds to the pages and adding text on top of it. This was because it was a easy part of developing the website to do and had taken less time that actually adding the content onto the website that actually building it.

Another thing that went well throughout the project was when I was creating and editing the menu and choosing the appropriate design for it. This was as I wanted to ensure that the menu was clear and simple so that people can access all pages easily.

The most enjoyable part of developing the website for the FMP was when I designed the layouts to all of the pages on there. I found this enjoyable as I was able to layout the boxes and where images and text would go and truly make the website my own without the need of much help at all.

Although much of the website was a near to simple process, there were many challenges that stood in my way of completing the final project. One of these problems where the content going into them as I could not find a few images to represent my earlier years and therefore resorted to using similar to what I wanted imaged from online to portray the nostalgia that way.

Another problem I faced when it came to the website was that I had to make sure that the lightbox was done accurately and to the best of my ability as it is the first thing out of the whole website to appear once a user visits the page. Therefore ensuring this was done to a high standard was very challenging.

After the completion of my website I considered the work that I had done to it and thought of how I could have potentially made a better project for the website. What I feel that I could improve on is where I used such as small amount of space for each page of the website when I had a very large space to add more images and text if I had wished to. Therefore I feel that the space leftover kind of goes to waste.

Overall, I think the website was quite successful as I was able to show what I felt was nostalgic to me of which was part of my intended proposal despite having to change few sections of it to get me through the project. Furthermore I feel that I have created it in accordance to my intended target audience. A reason behind this is because it has the photograph on it and its colours and fonts I have use to attract the 15-25 age range of which I talked about in my proposal slides.

Website Proposal V2 (Considering how I could make information more appealing)

I would like to create a website to display all my life from past to present. This will show others my progression throughout my life so far. To present the information such as images on the website in a creative way I could make it kind of like a virtual reality website where the user will click on the image and it will take them to a 360 degrees view of the location or place.

This shows the nostalgia to the user in a fun and imaginative way so that they feel like they were there and can see my memories from a different point of view. The text would not be able to be part of this VR material for the website, however, I could add a sound bar which would read out the explanations to why I have produced and used such images, this would be easier access to information especially if the user decides not to read this.

Adding to that, if they pressed on the audio explanation before then viewing the image that would give them the chance to picture at the place of the image what happened and why this was nostalgic to me. The actual layout of the website I would keep the same throughout the entire website just changing the content on each one this would make it easier to view and navigate around for those visiting the website.

Colour schemes and text I would use are this such as Verdana and a white on a darkened bluey background as this would seem quite bold and complimentative with the images and text styles used. This would display information on the website clearly ensuring that users can see all relevant information without difficulty.

I would research into websites that I feel would be similar to my own as well as looking through some Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality websites to get a gist on how these are created and how I could potentially use this style of website as part of my final major project. https://www.aurasma.com/ (Augmented Website Example) This AR website I could use this to explain and show what the images are https://vr.chromeexperiments.com/ (Virtual Reality Example) This VR experience could be used to select and show my images in a panorama way. I also looked at the Google I/O 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2VF8tmLFHw of which shown how this VR/AR technology can be used and what could be done with this in the future.

WEEKLY REFLECTIONS

This is where you think about your FMP learning journey and development.

Don’t simply describe what you did - consider what you have learnt and how this has benefitted your project.

Week 1

27.02.2017

This week you worked on your initial ideas and started your FMP workbook.

What did you learn in your sessions this week

How to portray nostalgia through media. We watched a show that solely focused on the theme of nostalgia which meant to come across that your project can be presented and make in any way.

How will this help you meet your targets - see FMP Workbook

I will be able to take this and involve nostalgia around my Idea more and by doing this I will focus more on the learning and working actually being do so I can use this to improve my media terminology.

What feedback did you find most useful – verbal or written

To use more media terminology in my written work and reflections and make sure that my research s more widespread and continues after a few pieces of research.

How will this be useful to you next week as your proposal is completed

This will be useful to me next week as I will be able to start and develop my research as I will have a more thorough understanding of what I will be doing therefore can base my research around this.

High Grade Tips

Research

  • ‘Thorough research’ - include plenty of sources and detailed analysis of this information

  • ‘relevant and coherent’ – make sure your research sources are not just the same as the Media product you hope to make - and talk about how they inform your planning

  • ‘sustained’ – continue your research throughout the eleven-week project and don’t just limit it to the first two weeks

  • ‘accomplished & considered’ – all of the above referred to in your daily/weekly reflections

Week 2

06.03.2017

This week you completed your FMP proposal.

What did you learn in your sessions this week

Tue - complete 1-8 of workbook, that’ll help me when it comes to production.

I also completed a slides presentation of my initial idea with brief details and things I would have liked to achieve later on in the project.

What feedback did you find most useful – verbal or written

I’ve found verbal feedback from my tutor most useful this week. This is were he suggested to explain in more detail how I will achieve something and not just what I will be doing. This was useful as I can include in more depth what I aim to achieve throughout the FMP and hope to gain a high grade from this.

What peer feedback did you get this week on your FMP idea

Other than the verbal feedback from the tutor above, I was given additional peer feedback from other members of the class. They explored how my project concept could have a good outcome and suggested to include more about how I plan to achieve this similar to what the tutor had said earlier within this week.

How will this be useful to you next week as your research and planning start

Having the workbook and proposal complete will be useful next week as my research and planning start as I can reflect on the workbook and have a good idea of my idea and the research source I could use.

High Grade Tips

Planning & Production

  • ‘effective planning, organisation’ – your FMP Workbook will explain what you need to do in the next few weeks to make sure all of your planning is completed, and also how this will help you

  • ‘efficient production against timescales’ – your FMP Proposal will clearly identify how you intend to create your project before the deadline in May

  • ‘commitment & subject engagement’ – all of the above referred to in your daily/weekly reflections

Week 3

13.03.2017

This week you started the research and planning aspect of your FMP

How did your first tutor feedback from last week help your project

Tutor helped my project as they advised additional bits to think about such as stylistics of the images I plan to take and by doing this how it will kind of fix all my work together in a particular style.

What did you learn from your research sessions this week

My research sessions I gathered a lot of information. Throughout my secondary research I got to take from other resources and image what impact they would have on my FMP idea and the primary/action research such as the questionnaires I developed indicated what path I should take and what people would want to see from this specific area. I watched some Photoshop tutorials on YouTube to help me understand how the software works before I use it later in my project.

What sources of information did you look at that were different from your proposed project

Information such as magazines and books I looked at of which I first proposed to look through out websites to gather all the research and information I needed, however, by looking through several books “I’m a Real Photographer” I have realised that I have found out a lot more as they hold a lot of context relevant to the type of project I will be doing.

How did your first peer feedback from last week help your project

My first peer feedback helped me as it told me what route to actually take and tell me what I would be good at doing in a specific area such as photography and web design.

How will this help you meet your targets - see FMP Workbook

The research completed and the advice I have received this week will help me in my project as I have gained a selection of media terminology throughout the first half of research for example speaking about the shots by using close-up, wide shot instead of a big image or a really little image. Throughout the project so far I am progressing to reach my targets gradually picking up terminology as I go through the final major project. The YouTube tutorials will help me as I will not have to watch them and learn from them later on as I will already have the knowledge to use it.

How will this be useful to you next week as you continue your research and planning

As I continue researching and planning production for FMP this will be useful as I will be able to take out more sustained research and develop further so I have a much wider understanding of how and what to take from these to help during the production of posters and the website development.

High Grade Tips

Research

  • ‘Thorough research’ – continue to include plenty of sources and detailed analysis of this information

  • ‘relevant and coherent’ – make sure your research sources are not just the same as the Media product you hope to make - and talk about how this has helped your planning so far

  • ‘sustained’ – your research continues throughout the eleven-week project and is not just limited to the first three weeks

  • ‘accomplished & considered’ – all of the above referred to in your daily/weekly reflections

Week 4

20.03.2017

This week you continued to research and plan your FMP

What did you learn from your research sessions this week

I learned more on how to use wix.com editor to a higher standard and produced a mock website to develop my skills in this area ready for production in the FMP. I also have written a few more website analysis’ and research more photographers to gain a better knowledge of styles of different websites and photography.

What sources of information did you look at that were different from your proposed project

I looked further at cameras such as film, digital and phone cameras as it was suggested that as the theme is nostalgia I could use these cameras for each year eg 2000-2017 using film camera for the early 00’s as this was used in these years.

What did you learn from your planning this week

I learned more on how to proceed when it comes to production as I have recalled more on website building and the shots of photography I may need or want to do during production.

How will this be useful to you next week as you continue your research and planning

It will be useful as I will start to do my pre-production next week therefore having the majority of my research done I will be able to plan where my locations can be based on what i want to do and base it on the research I have completed.

High Grade Tips

Planning & Production

  • ‘effective planning, organisation’ – your FMP Workbook will explain what you will do in the next few weeks to make sure all of your planning is completed, and also how this will help you

  • ‘efficient production against timescales’ – your FMP Proposal will clearly identify how you intend to create your project before the deadline in May

  • ‘commitment & subject engagement’ – all of the above referred to in your weekly reflections

Week 5

27.03.2017

This week you completed the planning for your FMP

What did you learn in your sessions this week

I learnt what online website builder I should use to create my website on for a better end product when I finish my FMP. I also learned more about the style of photography of which people may like by completing a recce and showing it to other individuals.

How will this help you meet your targets - see FMP Workbook

This will help me help me meet my targets because I could now be able to go onto wordpress.com of which a web designer suggested to create my website on and get to familiarize myself with the website before actually creating my own.

What feedback did you find most useful – verbal or written

I found the feedback from the web designer like the one above to not create a website on wix.com and to use wordpress.com instead really effective information this is because it will improve what my website will look like at the end of the final major project if I decide to take his advice.

How will this be useful to you over the next two weeks as you are on Easter break

This research and the start to my pre-production will be very helpful next two weeks when on my easter break because I can start to complete more recces and start my production on the wordpress website to ensure that I can meet my deadline in may for the project.and when it comes to production I will be able to use the recce’s as a guideline of how to create my images I want to take for my website for the FMP.

High Grade Tips

Research

  • ‘Thorough research’ - include plenty of sources and detailed analysis of this information

  • ‘relevant and coherent’ – make sure your research sources are similar to the Media product you hope to make, and talk about how this has influenced your own planning

  • ‘sustained’ – your research continues throughout the eleven-week project and is not just limited to the first five weeks

  • ‘accomplished & considered’ – all of the above referred to in your weekly reflections

Planning & Production

  • ‘effective planning, organisation’ – your FMP Workbook will explain what you need to do in the weeks after the Easter break to make sure all of your planning is referred to effectively

  • ‘efficient production against timescales’ – your FMP Proposal will still clearly identify how you intend to create your project before the deadline in May

  • ‘commitment & subject engagement’ – all of the above referred to in your weekly reflections

Week 6

03.04.2017

Easter Break – Week One

What did you do in the first week of your holiday

On my first week during the Easter Break I carried out a couple of small recce shots on both my old Windows Phone and my Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone. Both contained okay quality not top shots of landscapes and their surroundings. I also complete some further pre-production so that this is finished before I come onto production.

What extra research have you done this week - link it here

I have presented a range of people with both different recces to see what they thought of them and which recce shots they liked the best. Their responses I then analysed and responded myself to what I thought of the responses and how they have helped me before I start production.

Did you do any recce shots or test shoots etc. - link them here

  1. Windows Phone Recce 1 Docs

  2. Windows Phone Recce 1 Slides

  3. Samsung S5 Recce 2 Docs

  4. Samsung S5 Recce 2 Slides

I completed two short recce shots of which were both successful and in places a little problematic, however, by doing these I was able to identify by asking others which of the recce shots would benefit me best if i were to complete my actual production images in this way. One of my recces were of Felixstowe of which I shot a few shots of the pier in construction and the sea landscape. I did include some shots of lampposts and a ‘P’ for parking to get those unique and interesting shots in with the landscapes. My other recce was taken from Lower Somersham where I had taken a good range of photos on a sunny day of the fields and smaller objects such as signs.

How will this be useful to you over the next two weeks as you are on Easter break

This piece or research ie the recce will be useful as I have analysed the information from the responses of it and by having done this I will be able to explore the areas of which I would like to use more in production.

Week 7

10.04.2017

Easter Break – Week Two

What did you do in the second week of your holiday

On my second week off during the Easter Break I completed my easter reflection so that I have a clear understanding of what I had completed over my holiday. I also started a small section of production. This involved a short intro for my website made with Legend (an app for smartphones) a few images and the start to my Nostalgia FMP website.

What extra research have you done this week

I have created a short intro as I have browsed on general websites (not for research) and see that some have promotional videos of small intros to promote in a way their website therefore I came up with the idea that I should make a small one, even though was not planned in my proposal based on what I had spotted on a range of general websites.

Did you do any recce shots or test shoots etc.

This week I had taken a few images for my actual production so that I do not fall behind during the actual production stage. I also created a small part of the website I have intended to create for the final major project so I can get a rough idea of how the software used works within it.

How will this be useful to you over the next two weeks as you are on Easter break

This was useful to me as it mant that next week when we are suppose to start production I will already have a minor head start of which will be very beneficial to me as I will be able to crack on with what i am doing in theses weeks so that I don’t stumble and have a fall back and have to reflect back onto my proposal to get the idea fresh back into my head.

Week 8

17.04.2017

This week was the start of your production process

How did your second tutor feedback from the week before the Easter break help your project

The second tutor feedback from the week before the Easter break helped me as he said to “ensure all my work eg research pre/post/production is completed in accordance with my action plan so I do not fall behind on the final major project.” Also to make sure my research keeps outgoing so I develop further knowledge of what and how I should create/do stuff related to my project.

What did you learn in your sessions this week

From advice from my tutor I learned to carry out test shots so that when I come to actually completing my final pictures I will have a better understanding of how to do them due to the testing involved within it.

How will this help you meet your targets - see FMP Workbook

This will help meet my targets as based on my action plan and call sheets I can use these to reflect on what I have done so that I can add more detail on the actual learning and equipment beings used therefore helping me achieve my target of using more media terminology within my written work such as these reflections and any further research I produce.

How did your second peer feedback from last week help your project

My second peer feedback helped with my project as I was informed that I have put a lot of detail into my work and to make sure I use this detail when I come to writing my evaluation for the project so that it gives me the best possible chance of achieving a good grade when FMP ends.

What practical work have you done this week - and how helpful was your earlier planning

I carried on with the short intro of which I have added to my website I have begun to develop on wix.com. My earlier planning helped to complete these as I can use my website research to help me with the layouts and colour schemes I use for the creation of the website and base some of it on my website questionnaire of which I got people to answer.

How will this be useful to you as your production process continues

This will be helpful to me as having the website already developed, when I take my images of ‘2000-17’ I will be able to upload the photos onto it without having to complete the website at the last minute which also increases the amount of time I will have to take all the images of which I will need for the project.

High Grade Tips

Practical Skills & Presentation

  • ‘Considered and capable demonstration of processes’ – very detailed documentation of your production process - such as still images, and annotated Screenshots of your specific production and editing process – including ‘what’ and ‘why’, not just ‘how’

  • ‘skills and knowledge used to develop alternative ideas’ – evidence of different ideas developed for more than one version of your Media product

Week 9

24.04.2017

This week was the second week of your practical production

What did you learn in your sessions this week

On the tuesday I added some old photos onto my wix website for the 2016 and 2017 page. I also created a photoshop document where I created a small poster type thing of me in front of a forestry background with text saying ‘FMP’ and ‘Josh Brinkley-Ripper.’ I am going to use this poster as an additional unplanned piece of production and will also upload it to the home page of the website. On wednesday I analysed my poster I created for the website and used the screenshots for evidence for work. Thursday I added some old images onto my website and also have written more text to go with the images explaining why they are nostalgic for me. I also screenshot the process of my website so I can use these to annotate and show how I developed the website at a future date and not have to look for the previous versions to look back on for the actual FMP. Friday I carried on from where I left off on Thursday and added additional past images to my website and edited the font styles and sizes.

Have you tried anything new this week - if so, was it a success

I tried completing a one off poster of myself of which is stated above, however, it turned out to be quite successful and am going to at a future date put it on my website so that it shows of more on the production side of things. To do this I erased parts of the original image and cropped the canvas down before pasting a forestry/field background in and adding text to it for more on the FMP.

What feedback did you find most useful – verbal or written

Verbal feedback from tutor was helpful on tuesday as she said to use photoshop to help use a different background for a different image. I was told to ensure that I book a camera so I could get all my shots done over the weekend and no later as this will help you within the time I have. I was also informed that if the whole proposed project such as images can’t be completed ensure that you evaluate what I do of what I have done in them in as much detail as possible.

How will this be useful to you as your production process comes to a conclusion

This will be helpful as I will have various pieces of production completed these include the website, the short intro lightbox I created in addition to the actual project, the images for the website, and another additional piece of production, the poster and the text on the website will all be nearly there with tidy ups to do the following week. Also an evaluation for the intro and the poster will be done so I will not have to go and do this at a later date and can thoroughly focus on the images for my website and the website itself the following week as all the poster and lightbox stuff I done on wednesday night this includes all the writing that goes with it. By having my text written on the website I will not have to waste time in the next few weeks doing thing when I come to finishing the project. As the screenshots of the website will be done all I have to do is get them up and start writing and explaining what I did for my website past of project.

High Grade Tips

Practical Skills & Presentation

  • ‘Considered and capable demonstration of processes’ – very detailed, annotated Screenshots of your specific production and editing process – including ‘what’ and ‘why’, not just ‘how’

  • ‘skills and knowledge used to develop alternative ideas’ – evidence of different ideas developed, and more than one version of your Media product

Week 10

01.05.2017

This week was the last of your production weeks

What did you learn in your sessions this week

In my sessions this week I finalises the majority of the content going onto my website. My images of which I wanted to use from those of which I have taken and got from other sources I put on their with additional explanations saying why I used these images to represent these years. I started my annotating my website screenshots of the process I had taken to develop my website and how I uploaded content onto it. After this I had written a small evaluation of what I thought went well and what challenges I had to overcome to complete my website.

How will this help you meet your targets - see FMP Workbook

This will help me meet my FMP targets as in the screenshot annotations I ensured I used media terminology, that will help me meet that target which was to include more media terminology in my work.

What feedback did you find most useful – verbal or written

Because of problems that have occurred at home, I had to briefly adjust what my intended projects outcome would be so for a few images they were taken from online sources from Google Images. This was suggested to me by my tutor as he explained that at least I will have a backup photo that I can still explain and use to portray my nostalgia towards it other than having no photo and no explanation at all. Therefore I took his advice and completed my website according to the feedback given.

How will this be useful to you as your project enters it’s final week

By having the majority of the website complete I can go on into my final week completing evaluations and applying minor tweaks to the website if needed for small improvements. Also by doing my annotated screenshots and evaluation based on the website I will not have to worry about doing this in my final week therefore reducing rushing about and not getting finished in time for the deadline.

Week 11

08.05.2017

This week was your ‘finishing off’ week - for both your edits and written work

How did your third tutor feedback from the week after the Easter break help your project

It help because I was able to continue on with my project taking into consideration all the feedback of which the tutor gave me to help me get my work completed to a higher standard.

What did you learn in your sessions this week

This week I completed my evaluation and annotations that will show people the processes taken in order to get to where I am now. Because I was not able to complete the website to what my intended proposal proposed I have also completed a version 2 of my proposal (which is under the evaluation) for my website to show what I would change if I ever were to complete the project again.

How has this helped you meet your targets - see FMP Workbook

Completing all my evaluation and annotated slideshows has helped me meet some of my target grades as I have been able to include a wide range of media terminology in my work through explaining the processes and use the appropriate media related word to show how I have complete my production for my FMP.

What feedback did you find most useful – verbal or written

I found the feedback to go back and have a thorough look back at all of my work such as the proposal and research pieces that I have done useful as I used this and spotted some mistakes of which I previously had made on them and improved the proposal to a higher standard so that I can hope to achieve a high grade at the end of the project. (Hopefully a distinction.)

How did your third peer feedback from last week help your project

The third peer feedback helped me with my project as I was able to take what they said about my production and actual project and use that to complete final tweaks and minor bits to ensure that the project was completed to the best of my ability.

High Grade Tips

Evaluation & Reflection

  • ‘reasoned decisions and inform the development of ideas’ – both your evaluation and the weekly reflections above will clearly show both how and why your ideas developed throughout the project

  • ‘demonstrating clarity in thinking’ – all of the above plus very clear links between your research, planning, idea development and the production of your poster and film trailer
