Current Grade: Merit
Target Grade: Distinction
Using your feedback from the December assessment list three targets to work towards over the next five weeks;
Use more Media terminology in my written work especially reflections.
Create more than a couple analysis’ to show you know about the subject.
Take more time during Production to get additional shots to use for post-production.
WEEKLY REFLECTIONS
This is where you think about your learning journey and development.
DON’T describe what you did - consider what you have experienced.
Week One
This week was about learning RAILING and analysing movie trailers and started your individual Narrative Planner.
What did you learn in your sessions this week
I’ve learned how to analyse trailer effectively with use of RAILING to help me during the analysing process. I’ve also learned that trailers and posters have to have that same theme to promote a specific film style.
What feedback did you find most useful – verbal or written
To add examples of good uses of sound in trailers was a good piece of feedback I got this week as it made me write more examples of media in my written work and analysis’.
What did you contribute to the sessions
I have answered a few questions about identifying the genre of a trailer and the themes that are present in a certain genre. I discussed ideas with my group in the later part of the session on Friday and came up with an initial idea to progress further next week in the pre-production area.
How will this help you meet your targets
The advice will help me meet my targets as examples can boost my research and analysis’ plus can relate and help me get to my target to use more media terminology in my written work. Answering a question and listening to the tutor got me aware of how trailers are shot to give me help during production where I can take time doing this while producing.
How will this be useful to you next week
This will be useful to me next week as I will be able to reference trailers and film posters in my work when I move onto the pre-production part of our initial idea ready for production the following week.
High Grade Tips
Research
‘Thorough research’ - include more sources of information and detail than the brief is asking for
‘relevant and coherent’ – make sure your research sources are a similar to the trailer you hope to make
‘sustained’ – your research continues throughout the five-week project and is not just limited to the first two weeks
‘accomplished & considered’ – all of the above referred to in your weekly reflections
Week Two
This was where you went through all your pre-production paperwork and did some test shots.
What did you learn in your sessions this week
n/a -had flu, wasn’t in.
What feedback did you find most useful – verbal or written
Wasn’t in this week but feedback from my peers who reviewed the work I had done from the group helped give tips on how to improve the risk assessments etc.
What did you contribute to your group this week
I completed some risk assessments and location finders checklists to the group from home as I was ill but this was so that we could start on with production the following week.
How will this help you meet your targets
This will help meet my targets as I will be able to use the media terminology from the assessments and use these in some of my own work such as the evaluations later on.
How will this be useful to you next week
All the pre-production will be done for next week so that we can go out and film at our locations to start the production of our trailers and the photoshoot.
High Grade Tips
Planning & Production
‘effective planning, organisation’ – your planning will clearly show how your group intend to create you film trailer and poster
‘efficient production against timescales’ – both individually and as part of your group you will show in detail how you plan to create you trailer and poster in the time available in your pre-production paperwork
‘commitment & subject engagement’ – all of the above referred to in your weekly reflections
Week Three
This was the week were you completed all your paperwork, looked at your test shots and went out shooting.
What did you learn in your sessions this week
In my sessions this week I've learned how to use the audio room to record our voiceovers for the trailers. I've also learned how to climb a tree to takes shots from a higher point in the woods.
What feedback did you find most useful – verbal or written
I've found that the feedback, to shoot as much as possible and review them later gave me more time to shoot and get as much content as possible for use later on in my final trailer in forthcoming post-production.
What did you contribute to your group this week
To contribute to my group this week I have filmed and taken unit stills in Kesgrave woods. Also I have contributed to filming ideas such as what shots to take to improve the rate and quality of production.
How will this help you meet your targets
The feedback to shoot more review later will ensure I meet my third target at the top as i have used more time during production other than wasting time reviewing footage for later use.
How will this be useful to you next week
got a lot to edit and use in post-production plus the wide range of shots taken will give me a better chance of creating a much better and professional looking film poster.
High Grade Tips
See Week Two above.
Week Four
This is where any last “pick ups” are shot and then start editing.
What did you learn in your sessions this week
During this week's sessions have learned to use different concentrations and text outline/drops to give it a much more engaging effect. I’ve also used special effects to improve my audio soundtrack thing in Nigels session.
What feedback did you find most useful – verbal or written
I felt that the verbal feedback was most useful this week. or starting to create my film poster I was told that a billboard type poster would be very effective given the certain picture I had taken for the poster itself. I used this advice and went along creating my film poster and it made a big impact.
What did you contribute to your group this week
I have edited along with other members of my group this week. Ensuring that the film trailers flowed well and transitioned into each other effectively.
How will this help you meet your targets
While editing I have came across a range of different tools used within the adobe softwares, Photoshop and Premiere Pro as a result I have been able to pick up keywords and new media terminology that can later be reflected and used in my written work.
How will this be useful to you next week
I will know where specific tools are on the software so will be able to edit with a slight bit of ease also will be able to continue on with my film poster in accordance to the feedback/advice that Tim and Joss gave me.
High Grade Tips
Practical Skills & Presentation
‘Considered and capable demonstration of processes’ – very detailed, annotated Screenshots of both your Photoshop & Premiere Pro editing processes – including ‘what’ and ‘why’, not just ‘how’
‘skills and knowledge used to develop alternative ideas’ – all of the above plus more than one version of your film poster and an individual edit of the film trailer
Week Five
This is where you finalise editing your individual / pair version of your trailer ready for screening, posters are finished, peer and tutor feedback and write your evaluation.
What did you learn in your sessions this week
To continue on cutting to the bea of the music used in the film trailer to give the visuals more power and relate to the drama genre through the sound as well as the shots and graphics used.
What feedback did you find most useful – verbal or written
Use more sound effects and voiceover audio recording in the group's trailer to give it more tension and drama so it gives the finished trailer more effect.
What did you contribute to your group this week
Final cuts and edits to our film trailer were completely finished and I exported the group’s film trailer and uploaded to the Google Drive and shared with the rest of the group.
How will this help you meet your targets
It helped me reach my target as thanks to getting a wide range of footage during production days as a result we were able to gather a range of shots to use while doing the post-production of the film trailer.
How will this be useful to you on your upcoming Final Major Project
I can reflect on the things I may not have done so well on so that I can improve my skills in these specific areas and address them appropriately during my Final Major Project. Plus the filming and editing skills I have obtained will help me in my FMP as I will have a wider experience and knowledge of media terms and what to do during the FMP.
High Grade Tips
Evaluation & Reflection
‘reasoned decisions and inform the development of ideas’ – both your evaluation and the weekly reflections above will clearly show both how and why your ideas developed throughout the project
‘demonstrating clarity in thinking’ – all of the above plus very clear links between your research, planning, idea development and the production of your poster and film trailer
